Cheryl Wilson–Smith 21 Pillows Exhibition | Ottawa School of Art Orleans Campus

08/23/2019

The Ottawa School of Art Orleans Campus is proud to present 21 Pillows, an interactive installation by Cheryl Wilson-Smith. It’s on display from Friday, September 6 to Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Ottawa School of Art’s Orleans Gallery located on the main floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre. On Sunday, September 29, from 1 to 3pm, we are pleased to have Cheryl Wilson-Smith here in the gallery for an artist talk followed by a reception. All are welcome!
Glass artist Cheryl Wilson Smith’s exhibition 21 Pillows draws its inspiration from a wilderness morain north of Red Lake, Ontario, where she lives. The exhibit consists of 21 tufted burlap pillows, upon which sit 10,000 handmade glass rocks. Visitors to the exhibit can move the rocks from pillow to pillow, exploring not only their impact on the environment in the gallery, but their impact on nature.

This exhibit took more than two years to create. Most of the stones are the layered, kiln-fired glass sculptures that are representative of Wilson-Smith’s work. Others are the result of an experimental combination of powdered glass and beach sand. The effect is a powerful metaphor about the impact we have on nature.

A glass artist and installation artist, Wilson-Smith lives in Red Lake, Ontario on the Canadian Shield, surrounded by the boreal forest. She has studied overseas and in North America, and has exhibited her work extensively across Canada. 21 Pillows has been funded by both the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.
