Art Show Chelsea Quebec | My Country is Winter

05/09/2018

Chelsea artist Reid McLachlan's exhibition of new paintings titled "My Country is Winter" opens May 10th at Galerie Old Chelsea in Chelsea Quebec.

Winter, ice, snow...those hackneyed stereotypes of Canada have been re-purposed by McLachlan and turned into metaphors for his feelings on the culture and politics of his home province of Québec.

Through these metaphors he explores themes of isolation, rejection and identity within the unique symbolism of his practice. What he uncovers reveals his complicated feelings and experiences as an anglophone Québécois living on unceded Algonquin territory in Québec. The one commonality he finds is that even though Québec is surely one of the few places where every cultural and linguistic group feels like a minority this, paradoxically, may be what binds them.

At first glance McLachlan's paintings may appear innocuous, sometimes even beautiful; but dig a little deeper, peer below the surface, and you will find layers of meaning and emotion that will reveal the complex relationship the artist has with Québec. This is a relationship that, with all of its problems, tensions, and worries is ultimately built upon love.
